Teeth begin moving within days of retention stopping. Not dramatically at first — but a retainer is a precise object, and a fraction of a millimetre of drift is the difference between one that seats properly and one that does not.
Call within a few days and we scan teeth that are still essentially where your treatment left them. The replacement fits, holds, and costs you a single appointment.
Leave it three months and one of two things happens. Either the new retainer is made to your drifted position, locking in movement you did not want. Or the drift is enough that nothing seats at all, and correcting it first becomes a short course of aligners before a retainer can be made. That is a considerably larger bill than the one you were avoiding.
Six months or more, and you may be looking at repeat orthodontic treatment.
Six signs your retainer needs replacing
It is gone
The most common one, and it almost always went out with restaurant rubbish wrapped in a napkin. Do not spend a fortnight hoping it turns up.
It is cracked or split
A cracked clear retainer no longer applies even pressure and will fail completely soon. Do not keep wearing it hoping it holds.
It has gone cloudy or thin
Clear retainers wear through over a few years. Cloudiness and thinning mean the material has done its work.
It does not seat properly
If it will not click into place, or only fits on one side, your teeth have moved. Do not force it — you will crack it and be left with nothing at all.
It is warped
Hot water, a dishwasher or a car dashboard in a Las Vegas summer permanently deforms the plastic. A warped retainer is not retaining.
A bonded wire came loose
If the wire behind your lower front teeth has debonded at one end, call quickly. Those teeth are no longer held, and a partly attached wire can also apply unwanted force.

Fabrication
Clear retainers are made quickly. Hawley retainers with a wire and acrylic plate take longer. We will give you a timeframe when you come in.
Fitting and back to nights
We check it seats correctly and is comfortable. If you have been without one for a while, expect it to feel tight for the first few nights — that is normal and it settles.
Replacement retainer pricing
Replacement retainers are charged separately from orthodontic treatment fees. Your original retainers were included in your treatment; replacements after that are not, whoever treated you.
The figure depends on which type you need. Clear removable retainers are the most economical. Hawley retainers with an acrylic plate and wire cost more but last considerably longer — often years rather than a few. A bonded wire is a different procedure again.
Two things worth knowing. Many dental plans include a benefit toward replacement retainers, and we can check yours when you call. Retainers are also generally an eligible FSA and HSA expense.

How much does a replacement retainer cost?
It depends on the type. Can you make a retainer if I was treated by another orthodontist?
Yes, and a large share of the replacements we make are for patients we never treated. We scan your teeth as they are now — your original records are not required. Moving, a closed practice or an orthodontist in another state are all common reasons.

If the drift is minor, a new retainer may be enough. If it is significant, a short realignment first is usually quicker and cheaper than people expect.
How long does a replacement take to make?

Should I get a spare made at the same time?
We would suggest it. A second set made at the same appointment costs less than a separate replacement later, and it turns losing one from a crisis into an inconvenience. Given how retainers are typically lost — in a napkin at a restaurant — a spare is sensible.
My bonded retainer wire came loose. Can you fix it?
Yes, and call promptly. A partly detached wire means those teeth are no longer being held, and it can also apply unintended force. It is usually re-cemented in a short visit.
Can I just buy a retainer online?
We would advise against it. An appliance that fits imprecisely applies uneven pressure night after night, which is exactly how teeth move — so a poorly fitting retainer can undo the result it was bought to protect. There is also no one assessing whether your teeth have drifted, which is the question that actually matters.
