Emergency Orthodontist in Las Vegas
Most orthodontic problems are uncomfortable rather than urgent, and nearly all can be sorted quickly. Here is what to do right now — and the few situations that need an emergency room instead of us.
When to skip us and go straight to an emergency room
Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department, not to an orthodontist, for any of the following:
- A blow to the face or head, particularly with any loss of consciousness
- A suspected broken or dislocated jaw, or a jaw that will not open or close
- Bleeding that does not stop with fifteen minutes of firm pressure
- Significant facial swelling, especially if it affects breathing or swallowing
- A knocked-out permanent tooth — go to a dentist or ER immediately; time matters enormously
- Any difficulty breathing, or a swallowed or inhaled appliance component
Go to the ER
Once you have been seen and are stable, call us and we will deal with the orthodontic side. Braces can always wait. The rest of the page covers everything that is genuinely an orthodontic problem.
What to do right now
Each of these is common. None is dangerous. Do the immediate step, then call us to book a repair visit.
Poking wire
Now: press a small ball of orthodontic wax over the end. If the wire has slipped round, you can gently nudge it back with the eraser end of a pencil. If it is still digging in, a clean nail clipper can trim the very end — but only if it is causing real injury, and cover the stub with wax afterwards.
Then: call us. Not urgent, but do not leave it a fortnight.
Loose or broken bracket
Now: if it is still on the wire, leave it and cover with wax. If it has come off completely, keep it and bring it in. A loose bracket is applying no force, so treatment on that tooth pauses.
Then: call within a day or two so we can re-bond it. Do not wait for your next scheduled adjustment.
Lost or broken retainer
Now: nothing you can do at home — do not attempt to wear a cracked one, as it will not hold correctly and may break further.
Then: call today. Teeth begin drifting within days, and a replacement made quickly will fit. Left for months, it may not. More on retainers.
Lost or cracked aligner
Now: go back to your previous set rather than skipping ahead or going without. Wearing nothing lets teeth drift and can cost you weeks.
Then: call us and we will advise whether to move forward, hold, or order a replacement.
General soreness after an adjustment
Now: over-the-counter pain relief at the usual dose, soft food for a day or two, and a warm salt water rinse. Cold things help. This is expected and settles within about three days.
Then: no need to call unless it is sharp, one-sided or lasting beyond a week.
Mouth sores or cheek irritation
Now: wax over whatever is rubbing, warm salt water rinses several times a day, and an over-the-counter oral gel if needed. The tissue toughens within a week or two.
Then: call if a sore is not improving after ten days.
Loose band or appliance
Now: if a band around a molar has come loose, do not try to reseat it. Keep it if it comes off entirely. Avoid chewing on that side.
Then: call within a day or two — a loose band can trap food and cause decay underneath.
Expander key turned wrong
Now: stop. Do not attempt to correct it by turning back, and do not double up on a missed turn.
Then: call and we will tell you exactly how to proceed. This is common and easily sorted with a phone call.

We are open Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and currently on a reduced schedule for a short period — so please call (702) 706-2468 rather than turning up. Being minutes from Silverado Ranch and eight to fifteen from most of Henderson, we can usually fit repairs in quickly. Outside hours, wax and salt water will hold you until morning for everything on this page.
What to keep at home
Orthodontic wax
Solves the overwhelming majority of braces problems on the spot. Keep a tin at home, one in the school bag and one in the car. We hand these out free — ask at any appointment.
Salt
Warm salt water rinses ease irritated cheeks, speed up tissue toughening and keep sores clean. Costs nothing and works better than most things sold for the purpose.
Over-the-counter pain relief
Ibuprofen or paracetamol at the standard dose covers adjustment soreness. Children’s formulations for younger patients.
Your retainer case
Most lost retainers went out with restaurant rubbish wrapped in a napkin. If it is out of your mouth, it is in the case — that is the entire prevention strategy.
Clean nail clippers
For trimming a wire end that is genuinely causing injury, and only then. Sterilise first, cut the very tip only, and cover with wax afterwards.
Our number, saved

Orthodontic emergency FAQ
What counts as a real orthodontic emergency?
Genuine emergencies are rare. Severe pain, a wire causing actual injury to the cheek or gum, a loose appliance that could be swallowed, or trauma to the face or teeth. Anything involving facial injury, a suspected fracture, uncontrolled bleeding or breathing difficulty is a medical emergency — go to an emergency room or call 911 first.
My bracket came off. Is that urgent?
Not urgent, but do not ignore it. A loose bracket applies no force, so that tooth stops moving. Cover it with wax if it is irritating you, keep the bracket if it detached completely, and call within a day or two to book a short re-bonding visit.
Can I cut a poking wire myself?
Only if it is genuinely causing injury and wax has not solved it. Sterilise a clean nail clipper, trim the very end only, and cover the stub with wax. Do not attempt to cut anything further back along the wire, and call us afterwards so we can check it.
I lost my retainer. How quickly do I need to act?
Today. Teeth begin drifting within days of retention stopping. A replacement made quickly will fit and hold; one made three months later may lock in the drift or fail to seat at all, in which case correcting it first becomes a short aligner case.
What do I do if I lose an aligner?
Go back to your previous set immediately rather than skipping ahead or wearing nothing. Then call us — depending on where you are in the sequence we will advise whether to advance, hold, or order a replacement.
Do you see emergencies outside office hours?
We are open Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and currently running a reduced schedule for a short period. Everything covered on this page can be managed at home overnight with wax and salt water. For anything involving facial trauma, breathing or uncontrolled bleeding, go to an emergency room rather than waiting.
Will an emergency repair cost extra?
Routine repairs during treatment — re-bonding a bracket, replacing a ligature, trimming a wire — are part of your care. Replacement retainers and replacement aligners lost outside the normal course are charged separately. Ask when you call and we will tell you before you come in.
I am not your patient. Can you help?
Call us. We can often help with an urgent problem even if you were treated elsewhere, particularly wires and loose brackets causing pain, and we make replacement retainers for patients from other practices. If your own orthodontist is available, they should be your first call, since they hold your records.
Call us. Most of this is a short visit.
(702) 706-2468, Monday to Friday. We are four minutes from Silverado Ranch and eight to fifteen from most of Henderson — repairs are usually quicker than the drive.
