Metal Braces in Las Vegas & Henderson
The most capable tool orthodontics has, and the most economical. Not the fallback option — frequently the right one.
The parts, and what each does
Metal braces look complicated and are conceptually simple. Four components do all the work.
Brackets are the small stainless steel squares bonded to the front of each tooth. Each one has a slot machined at a precise angle — that angle is the instruction telling the tooth where to end up. Brackets are not interchangeable; the one on your upper canine differs from the one on your lower incisor.
The archwire runs through every bracket slot and does the moving. It arrives bent into the shape of an ideal arch and, as it slowly returns toward that shape, it drags the teeth with it. Wires are changed through treatment — thin and flexible early on, thicker and stiffer later for precise control.
Ligatures hold the wire in the slot. Usually small elastic rings, and the part that comes in colours. Self-ligating brackets replace these with a built-in clip.
Bands are metal rings cemented around the back molars where more anchorage is needed. Not every case uses them.
What metal does that nothing else does as well
Nothing is out of range
Severe rotations, closing extraction spaces, guiding an impacted canine into the arch, substantial bite correction. There is no orthodontic movement metal braces cannot achieve.
They never depend on you
They work while you sleep, forget, travel and eat. For patients who know aligner compliance would be a problem, this alone decides it.
Strongest material
Stainless steel bends rather than chips. Ceramic is more brittle and lingual brackets are more delicate. For patients hard on their teeth, metal simply breaks less.
Precise control
Auxiliaries — elastics, springs, mini-screws, hooks — attach directly to brackets. That toolkit is what makes complex cases tractable.
Lowest cost
Consistently the most economical option we offer, which matters when a family is treating two or three children.
Often the fastest
For complex movement, metal frequently finishes sooner than the alternatives, because it applies force more directly and never pauses for a forgotten tray.
Metal against the alternatives
| Metal | Ceramic | Lingual | Invisalign | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Visibility | Obvious | Blends | Hidden | Nearly invisible |
| Case range | All | Most | Wide | Mild to moderate |
| Compliance | None needed | None needed | None needed | 20–22 hrs/day |
| Durability | Highest | Good | Moderate | Trays replaced |
| Cost | Lowest | Mid | Highest | Mid |
| Colours | Yes | Limited | No | No |
The only real drawback is that they show. That is a legitimate consideration and we take it seriously — it is why we offer three alternatives. But if visibility is not your deciding factor, metal gives you the widest range of achievable results at the lowest price, and there is no clinical reason to pay more. Colours, and why they matter more than adults think
The elastic ligatures come in a full range of colours, and they are changed at every adjustment — so there is a fresh choice every four to six weeks.
Parents tend to treat this as a novelty. For a twelve-year-old it is frequently the only part of the whole eighteen months they control, and that turns out to matter. Kids who pick their own colours engage with treatment noticeably better than kids who have it done to them.
Practical notes: white and clear ligatures stain with coffee, curry and tomato sauce, so darker colours hold up better between visits. Yellows and golds can make teeth look less bright next to them. Dark blues, purples and teals tend to flatter. School colours before a game and orange and black at Halloween are both extremely popular here.
Adults can have clear or silver-grey ligatures, which keep metal braces considerably more discreet than most people expect.
Bonding day and the fortnight after
Bonding — 60 to 90 minutes
Teeth are cleaned and prepared, each bracket positioned and bonded individually, then the first archwire threaded and secured. No anaesthetic and no drilling. Your jaw will be tired from holding open; that is the worst of it.
That evening and the next few days
A dull ache as the teeth begin moving. Soft food, over-the-counter pain relief, and wax over anything that rubs. Cold things help.
Week one to two
The cheeks and lips toughen up. Speech is unaffected with front-mounted braces. By week two most patients report they have stopped noticing them.
Adjustments every four to six weeks
Short visits. The wire is changed or tightened, ligatures replaced, progress checked. Mild pressure for a day afterwards each time.
Debond
Brackets come off in a single appointment and the adhesive is polished away. Impressions or a scan for retainers happen the same day — the gap between debond and retainer should be hours, not weeks.
Metal braces FAQ
Are metal braces cheaper than other options?
Consistently, yes — they are the most economical option we offer. Ceramic brackets cost more to manufacture, aligners carry per-tray laboratory fees, and lingual braces are custom-made for each tooth. Your exact figure depends on treatment length and complexity, and you receive it in writing at the free consultation.
How long do metal braces take?
Most comprehensive treatment runs eighteen to twenty-four months. Simple crowding can finish considerably sooner. Cases involving significant bite correction, extractions or an impacted tooth run longer. You get a projected timeline based on your own 3D scan rather than an average.
Do metal braces hurt?
Placement does not, though your jaw gets tired from holding open. Expect a dull ache for two or three days afterwards as teeth begin to move, and mild pressure for a day after each adjustment. Over-the-counter pain relief and soft food cover it.
Are metal braces obvious?
They are visible, yes, and that is the main trade-off. Today’s brackets are noticeably smaller and lower-profile than those adults remember from the nineties, and adults who choose clear or silver-grey ligatures find them considerably more discreet than expected.
Can adults get metal braces?
Certainly, and plenty do — particularly where the case is complex or where cost matters. Roughly one in four of our patients is an adult. If visibility is a concern there are three alternatives, but there is no clinical reason an adult should avoid metal.
What are self-ligating braces?
Brackets with a built-in clip holding the wire instead of elastic ligatures. That means no coloured bands and nothing to stain, and adjustment appointments can be slightly quicker. Claims that they dramatically shorten overall treatment are not well supported by evidence, and we would rather say so.
What can I not eat with metal braces?
Hard, sticky and chewy foods: ice, hard sweets, caramel, taffy, nuts, popcorn kernels and jerky. Cut apples, carrots and corn off the cob rather than biting in. Almost every broken bracket we re-bond traces back to that list.
Can I choose the colours?
Yes, at every adjustment, so there is a new choice every four to six weeks. White and clear stain fastest — darker colours hold up better between visits. Adults typically choose clear or silver-grey.
