Braces for Teens in Las Vegas & Henderson
Two people have to agree to this: the one paying and the one wearing it. We talk to both, and we talk to your teen directly.
Why eleven to fourteen is the window
Most teenagers start treatment between eleven and fourteen, and the reason is biological rather than administrative. By then the permanent teeth are largely through, so there is a full arch to work with — but growth has not finished, which means the jaw is still responsive in ways it will not be at twenty.
That matters most for bite correction. Where the upper and lower jaws do not meet correctly, treatment during active growth can guide development. The same discrepancy addressed at twenty-five is a harder problem, and occasionally a surgical one.
It is also, practically speaking, easier. Teenagers heal quickly, adapt to appliances within days, and are not scheduling adjustments around client meetings.
None of which means rushing. If your teen’s canines have not erupted or the timing is not right, we will say wait and schedule a review rather than start something that finishes badly.
Metal, clear, or Invisalign Teen?
Three real options, and the right one depends as much on your teenager’s habits as on their bite.
| Metal braces | Clear ceramic | Invisalign Teen | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Visibility | Obvious | Blends at a distance | Nearly invisible |
| Relies on them | No | No | Yes — 20–22 hrs/day |
| Food restrictions | Yes | Yes, plus staining | None |
| Sports | Mouthguard over brackets | Mouthguard over brackets | Remove, standard guard |
| Colour bands | Yes | Limited | No |
| Cost | Lowest | Mid | Comparable to ceramic |
| Case range | All | Most | Mild to moderate |
The honest filter on aligners. Invisalign Teen only works if it is genuinely worn twenty hours a day, every day, including sleepovers and school trips. If you already know that is unlikely, fixed braces are the kinder recommendation — they work whether or not anyone remembers. We would rather have that conversation at the consultation than eight months into a case that has not moved.
The questions they will not ask in front of you
“Will it hurt?”
Placement does not. The two or three days after do — a dull ache, manageable with ibuprofen and soft food. Same for a day after each adjustment. By week two most teenagers stop noticing them entirely.
“Can I still play?”
Yes. Football, basketball, soccer, wrestling — all fine with an orthodontic mouthguard fitted over the brackets. The standard boil-and-bite kind does not fit over braces, so do not use one. For band and wind instruments there is an adjustment period of a week or two.
“What about school photos?”
A real consideration and worth planning around. If picture day falls in the first months, ceramic or aligners are worth weighing. We can also often time the start date around a specific event if you tell us at the consultation.
“Can I pick the colours?”
Every appointment, if they want. Bands change at each adjustment, so there is a fresh choice every four to six weeks. It is a small thing and it matters more than adults expect — it gives them something in the process that is theirs.
“How long, really?”
Eighteen to twenty-four months for most comprehensive cases. We give a projected date at the start rather than a vague range, because “when will they come off” is the question that gets asked every single visit.
“Will I sound weird?”
With conventional braces, no. With aligners, a slight lisp for a few days that disappears. Lingual braces behind the teeth take one to two weeks to adjust to, which is worth knowing before choosing them.
What this asks of you
Appointments every four to eight weeks
Braces need adjusting every four to six weeks, aligners checking every six to eight. Over two years that adds up, which is why we hold early-morning and after-school slots and keep visits short. Siblings in treatment get booked back to back.
Hygiene supervision, at least early on
Teenagers are not naturally thorough around brackets. Plaque left sitting there leaves permanent white marks on the enamel once braces come off — a result nobody wants after two years and a real investment. Check their brushing for the first month.
Keeping their regular dental cleanings
Six-month cleanings matter more during treatment, not less. Braces make plaque harder to remove, so the hygienist is doing more work than usual.
Paying for it, manageably
Most families here use monthly payments at 0% APR with no credit check. We verify your orthodontic insurance benefit first — note that many plans limit orthodontic coverage to dependent children, so a teenager is often exactly who the benefit is for.
The retainer conversation, in two years
This is the one that decides whether the investment holds. Most adults in our chair are here because nobody was firm with them at seventeen. We will be firm with your teenager, and we would appreciate the backup.
Braces for teens FAQ
What age do most teens get braces?
Most start between eleven and fourteen, once the permanent teeth are largely through but before growth finishes. That window matters for bite correction in particular, since treatment during active growth can guide jaw development in ways that are harder to achieve later.
Can my teen play sports with braces?
Yes, with an orthodontic mouthguard designed to fit over brackets. Standard boil-and-bite guards do not fit properly over braces and should not be used. With aligners, remove them and wear a normal mouthguard.
Is Invisalign Teen a good idea for my child?
It depends entirely on whether they will wear it twenty to twenty-two hours a day. Invisalign Teen includes compliance indicators that fade with wear so parents can check, plus free replacements if one is lost. If you already suspect compliance will be a problem, fixed braces are the more reliable choice.
How long will my teen be in braces?
Eighteen to twenty-four months for most comprehensive cases. Simpler crowding finishes sooner. We provide a projected end date at the start, based on the 3D scan rather than an average.
Can my teen still play a wind instrument?
Yes, though there is an adjustment period of one to two weeks for brass and woodwind players while the embouchure adapts. Wax over the brackets helps considerably during that time. Tell us at the consultation if this matters, since it can influence which option we recommend.
Will braces affect school photos or events?
They will be visible in photos, which is a legitimate consideration. If a specific event falls early in treatment, mention it — we can sometimes time the start date around it, and ceramic braces or aligners are considerably less noticeable in pictures.
Does dental insurance cover braces for teenagers?
Often, yes. Many dental plans carry a separate lifetime orthodontic benefit, and a good number limit it specifically to dependent children — so a teenager is frequently exactly who it is intended for. We verify your plan before treatment starts.
What if my teen refuses to wear their retainer afterwards?
It is the most common reason adults end up back in treatment. We recommend a bonded retainer behind the lower front teeth for exactly this situation — it is fixed in place, so compliance stops being a variable. We will discuss it at debond.
Bring them in. We will talk to them, not just about them.
